The client was furious. He didn't know how or why, he just knew it had something to do with me. He was right. About an hour ago, I switched the DNS to the new server. "Standard WordPress migration", I thought to myself.
I didn't realize that when I switched the DNS the mail system would stop working. Typical noob mistake. Ok, no problem. "I'll just go change those MX records".
Fast forward to 30 minutes later. Nothing is working. I can't find the MX settings.
THE PANIC sets in.
With cold sweat on my forehead, I ended up calling the support line for the client's hosting account. I waited over an hour on hold for someone called Patel to tell me I needed to reboot my computer.
I ask for a supervisor. Patel writes down my info and eventually... I get a call back. Time grinds to a halt while I'm waiting. My stomach is in knots.
Thankfully, I get the information I need and I can get the email systems back up. As a result of switching things back, the old website is back up. I haven't managed to migrate the site to the new VPS at all.
The client never told me about his email systems, but I also never asked! DNS entries can be simple but every now and then, they can be become complicated. It's better to take your time and make sure you understand the client's complete setup! I also recommend you setup a staging ground to try things out before making changes on the client's live site!
